Vaccines for the Trip

We are all asking so many questions concerning our malaria medication.  When we first signed up for this adventure, we knew there were certain vaccinations we would need.  Yellow Fever, Typhoid, and Malaria to name the “biggies.” No problem, I visited my doctor, and he gave me several prescriptions including one Malaria  called “Malarone.”  However, when I went to the pharmacy to fill those prescriptions, I nearly had a heart attack.  The “Malarone” was nearly $250 bucks! Yikes.  ”I don’t think so” was my response to the pharmacist who may have thought I was a little rude.  I told her, “keep it, I’ll find something else.” Well, come to find out, there are two other options that are effective for those who are traveling to Brazil. However, they come with side effects.  One will give you a rash in the sun, the other, gives you dreams that have been described to me as “horrific” and “bizarre.” Great!  What is malaria again?  How bad can it be?  Maybe I should just take my chances?  No, seriously – I would never do that, but now I have to choose.  Looking pasty white & blotchy on the beach or running around spooked and sleepless in Brazil with huge dark circles under my eyes.  Decisions, decisions.

  1. Well, what did you decide re. the medications? I’m sure Malaria is no fun – in Brazil or elsewhere!

  2. Well, I’m leaning towards the one that gives you a rash. We’re being told that Dengue Fever has broken out, and we’re being advised to cover up as much as possible and bring a repellant with “deet” – that way, no one will see my blotchiness.

  3. Good luck with choosing!

The hallucinations are very real for the one drug. I would not take it.

We didn’t take anything for Malaria when we went to VietNam…brave, or stupid? Who knows! ;O)
